PROJECT: REMOVAL OF HAZARDOUS AND NON-HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS
Where: Capitol Heights, Maryland - Prince George's County
Overview:
Investigative activities were initiated as part of a property transaction. The 1.51-acre site is located in a mixed commercial and residential area and is currently occupied with a 42,000 square foot building and has been occupied by a chemical company since 1965. The facility has historically produced and currently produces chemical mixtures and repackages them for industrial uses. Solvents such as methylene chloride, perchloroethylene (PCE) and trichloroethylene (TCE) were utilized through the mid-a980’s along with iso-propanol, lactane (mixture of hexane and toluene), xylenes, mineral spirits and high-flash naptha. The resulting chemical mixtures were mostly re-sold as print cleaners and blanket washers. With decreasing markets and the availability of water-based solvents, starting in the early to mid-1980’s through today the chemicals changed and TCE/PCE were no longer uti-lized in the process. Methylene chloride is still utilized for re-packaging. The methylene chloride that is re-packaged for re-sale goes primarily to plastic fabrica-tors and is not related to the construction products. Other current specialties utilized mostly in construction include form sealers, concrete sealers, heavy duty cleaners, concrete removers, bonding agents, admix-tures, rust removers and rust inhibitors. This project is on-going.
